A bookkeeper is person who is responsible for the day-to-day financial transactions for a business. These activities include paying bills, invoicing customers, recording transactions, and generating reports. Other people rely on the information prepared by a bookkeeper, including; owners, CPAs, tax preparers, and lenders.
Like any profession, bookeepers may have a wide range of years of expereince, or additional competencies in related subjects such as payroll, taxes and administration. There are no formal eduction requirements for this position, but it does require competency in financial matters. Work experience and accounting software experience is generally preferred.
In the hierarchy of accounting, bookkeepers are the most cost-effective solution. Thereafter, the ascending ranking of experience and cost are; accountants, certified public accountants (CPA), and CPA attorney. Similarly, in the tax world, you have unenrolled agents, enrolled agents, and tax attorneys. Each professional will likely have specialized expereince within a certain field such as real estate, service-based business, product-based business, etc.
